This is a very interesting and handsome pictorial map of the Northwest Territories and its history. The map covers the Great Lakes area, including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. It was created for the Works Progress Administration of Ohio and is full of information and historical facts, with drawings of forts, settlements including wigwams, agricultural activities (plowing, harvesting, etc.) and lots of animals. Shown are both Native American and Europeans. The numerous insets show significant historical events and the locations of these events, including “Thomas Jefferson’s Conception for the Subdivision of the New West”. The compass rose is in a form of centuries-old cartographic tradition.
