This is an early plan for lower Manhattan and is Bridges’ version of the earlier, failed 1801 Mangin-Goerck plan which was commissioned to prepare a new city plan. The Mangin-Goerck map had features not true to the actual topography – like straight shore lines, streets not present, etc. Nonetheless, Bridges used for his plans as basis this failed and rejected earlier map and carried its elements into this map. The map is finely engraved with all streets named along with notations on the Wards. Some of the street names and layout remain to this date; however, the combination of a false premise and future urban engineering changed numerous surface elements and street names versus what is seen on the map. At the left is a large legend locating 52 important places and buildings within a scroll cartouche. The map was engraved by Peter Maverick. Bridges subsequently was the City Surveyor who, in 1811, is best know for laying out New York’s grid street structure.
